A knee brace can be an important part of managing knee pain, osteoarthritis, or a ligament injury – particularly when you want to remain active while reducing stress on an injured or arthritic knee.

At Calgary Core Physiotherapy, we provide custom 3D-printed OssKin knee braces and Corflex Knee-O-Trakker braces, individually designed to fit your unique anatomy. Our knee bracing service is provided by physiotherapist Dylan Macdonald, who is trained and certified to assess, measure, and fit custom knee braces.

What Knee Braces do we Offer?

The appropriate brace depends on the condition of your knee and what you want to be able to do with it.

The OssKin Evoke™ is a custom 3D-printed unloader brace designed specifically for people with knee osteoarthritis and conditions where reducing or redistributing load through the knee may be beneficial.

An unloader brace works by helping shift pressure away from the painful, arthritic compartment of the knee. For someone with arthritis primarily affecting the inside or outside of the knee, this can help reduce the load going through that area while allowing the person to continue walking and participating in activities.

The Evoke is individually designed around the patient’s leg using 3D scanning and is then 3D printed to create a highly personalized fit. OssKin describes the brace as being designed to provide unloading while allowing natural movement of the knee.

This can make an unloader brace particularly useful for people who want to remain active, manage symptoms, or reduce the demands placed on the arthritic portion of the knee.

The OssKin Provoke™ is designed for knees affected by ligament injury or instability. It provides functional support to help protect the knee during movement while allowing the knee to move as naturally as possible.

The Provoke may be appropriate for patients with injuries involving the:

  • ACL
  • MCL
  • LCL
  • Meniscus
  • Chronic knee ligament instability

Unlike the Evoke, which is designed to unload an arthritic compartment of the knee, the Provoke is designed primarily to support a ligament-deficient or unstable knee. OssKin’s custom 3D scanning and printing process allows the brace to be individually designed around the patient’s leg.

For patients returning to sport, work, or higher-level activities following a ligament injury, a functional brace can provide an additional level of support and confidence.

How it works and what to expect

  • Assessment

    Dylan will review your medical history and assess your knee to determine whether custom bracing is appropriate. If you have had imaging such as an X-ray or MRI, he will review the relevant findings and consider how they relate to your symptoms and functional goals.

  • Determining the Right Brace

    Dylan will determine whether a brace, or another approach is most appropriate based on your knee condition, symptoms, stability and activity requirements. He will also explain how the brace is intended to work and, importantly, when and how you should use it.

  • Custom 3d Measurement

    Once the appropriate brace has been selected, Dylan will take the measurements required to create your personalized brace.

  • Confirming Fit & Function

    Your OssKin custom 3D-printed brace will typically arrive in approximately 2–3 weeks, and your Corflex Knee-O-Trakker brace will typically arrive in approximately 3-5 business days.. At your fitting appointment, Dylan will carefully assess the fit and function of the brace. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure that the brace is comfortable, secure and functioning as intended. You will also be shown how to put the brace on correctly, how to adjust it, and how to use it during your daily activities, exercise, work or sport.
