Athletic Therapy
Athletic Therapy helps those who play sports or live an active lifestyle recover from injuries to their muscles, bones, and joints.
About Athletic Therapy
Athletic Therapy and Physiotherapy both focus on injury rehabilitation, but they differ in scope and patient population.
Athletic Therapists specialize in musculoskeletal and sport-related injuries, particularly in active populations such as athletes. They are also well known for providing on-field emergency care during sporting events. In the province of Alberta, Athletic Therapists CAN NOT break the dermis (no dry needling or medical acupuncture!) or perform joint manipulations.
Physiotherapists, on the other hand, treat a broader range of conditions, including neurological disorders, chronic diseases, and cancer rehabilitation. They are better suited for complex patients or those with multiple comorbidities. In the province of Alberta, Physiotherapists that have completed post graduate training can perform dry needling, medical acupuncture and joint manipulations.
What does an Active Therapy session include?
Discussion about the injury, how it happened, and relevant medical or activity history.
Physical examination, including movement tests to identify the injury and any contributing factors.
Explanation of the injury, expected recovery timelines, and rehabilitation goals.
May involve exercise prescription, manual therapy, and other techniques to promote recovery.
Meet Jacalyn
Your Certified Athletic Therapist (CAT(C))
Inspired by the work of both Athletic Therapists and Physiotherapists, and intrigued by the complementary scopes of each profession, Jacalyn pursued dual training to integrate both into her clinical practice. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Therapy from the University of Manitoba and later completed her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at the University of Alberta, all while working as a Strength & Conditioning Coach at Winsport.
Athletic Therapy effectively treats musculoskeletal injuries (muscles, bones and joints) across all populations. Whether you are an Olympic or a Recreational athlete, athletic therapy is part of the sports medicine model that can get you back to being your active self. Treatment focuses on soft tissue manual therapy, education and exercises.
Many insurance providers will cover Athletic Therapy treatments – check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
*Please note: no needling or manipulations are performed during these appointments. If you want those modalities, please book a physiotherapy appointment with Jacalyn.
